All forms of survey error, including falsification, reduce the overall accuracy of the data products. One very difficult task of survey management is obtaining proof of authenticity or, conversely, to identify the degree of data falsification in the collected data. Government policy-setters, social science researchers, philanthropic foundations and others rely on research surveys to provide information about many topics, and it is important to collect survey data with sufficient power and reliability for their purposes. The combination of these techniques provides an adaptable, multi-sourced, evidence-based process for quality assurance and control. In addition, we follow standard practices for quality management we conduct systematic review of paradata and response data for item non-response, timing outliers, duplicate records and high levels of CARI refusals, and our survey supervisors hold quality-review discussions on a regular basis. Collection of global positioning system (GPS) coordinates can confirm the location of interviews conducted by field staff using mobile devices. When feasible, use of computer audio-recorded interviewing (CARI) allows detailed oversight of in-person surveys that otherwise lack direct observation, and it can augment live monitoring. This paper describes techniques used at RTI and examples of falsification detectable by those means. This environment calls for multiple methods that aid the monitoring of data collectors and review of data after receipt. Quality assurance teams, charged with confirming the authenticity of interviewer-collected survey data, encounter ever-changing challenges in performing this task. Falsification in survey data exists at many stages of data collection and presents serious consequences to the stakeholders.

I see that Livescribe now offers a new pen that automatically transmits via wifi all your notes to your Evernote account, thereby achieving the same kind of automated cloud storage of notes that I did.

Instead, I had to install a program called Junction and create virtual pointers that said to the Livescribe software, “Hey, that archive of Livescribe files isn’t really here it’s over there in Dropbox.” Setting it up involved typing in commands in the C prompt, something that took me back to good old DOS days. The process wasn’t as simple as just moving the files from the location on my hard drive to a folder in Dropbox.

Thanks to this blog post by Rohan Kapoor, I’ve learned how to store the Livescribe files in Dropbox and thus make them available on any computer where I’ve installed the Livescribe desktop software. Until this week, though, I only had that searchable digitized place available on one computer (my work computer). It’s awesome to be able to take notes in the freest possible way–with a pen and paper–and know that regardless of which notebook I am using, all my notes will be aggregated in one, searchable, digitized place (the Livescribe desktop software).
I’ve loved my Livescribe pen since I got it a few summers ago.
